Trump Administration’s Controversial Decision on Critically Ill Four-Year-Old Sparks Outrage

A seriously ill four-year-old girl who was instructed to leave the United States has received encouraging news.
The four-year-old girl, along with her mother, Deysi Vargas, entered the United States legally in July 2023 for medical treatment. She was born with short bowel syndrome, a severe condition that impacts the small intestine and leads to difficulties in nutrient absorption. She relies on a backpack that provides her with the nutrients she cannot absorb on her own.
This advanced treatment is exclusively offered in the United States, and they were permitted to remain in the country for a duration of two years.

However, in April of this year, the family received the unforeseen news that they would need to leave the United States. Just three months into President Donald Trump’s administration, they were notified that their humanitarian parole was being revoked and they would need to return to Mexico immediately. This decision to revoke their parole and work authorization was issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
Trump, who has taken a hardline approach to immigration, enacted a series of executive orders aimed at removing “illegal aliens” from the country upon his return to the White House.
Legal representatives for the family cautioned that the girl, who is referred to by the alias Sofia, could face death “within days” if her treatment were to cease.
“If they deport us and remove my daughter’s access to her specialized care, she will die,” Vargas stated in Spanish during a news conference last week.
The family’s attorney, Rebecca Brown, from the pro bono legal organization Public Counsel, reached out to officials to advocate for the family’s situation, and now the girl and her mother have received a one-year extension.

Brown remarked: “This is a clear case of medical necessity. This child will die, and it is senseless for that to occur. It would simply be a cruel sacrifice.”
She further stated that medical professionals indicated Sofia “will die within a matter of days” if her treatment is halted. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support Sofia’s case, aimed at gathering financial assistance to cover her treatment expenses during this “uncertain” period.
It concludes: “Due to unforeseen changes in our situation, we are facing an urgent matter that could affect Sofia’s ongoing medical treatment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.”
“Any assistance during this challenging and uncertain time would be immensely appreciated and will help us remain focused on her care.”
